When French writer Marcel Proust finished writing the seven volumes of his work “In Search of Lost Time”, the First World War had just ended, leaving 600,000 dead. The horror of war is background for the reflections of the main character, who dives into his memories in order to face his personal issues. Childhood is evoked from sensations and stimuli such as sounds, images, aromas and tastes, bringing up memories that could not be voluntarily accessed.
Always attentive to the stimuli of the moment, short films also have the ability to evoke memories, as well as to point out trends. And this was the thought that led the Festival’s programming work this year: seeking references from the past and pointing out trends that would help us to better understand the present, which is always reflected in the productions submitted. We are all “in search of the time of now”.
In the wide panorama of our imagery printed in this year’s films, the present reveals itself mainly in the daily micropolitics of groups that assert otherness, but also points to the rescue of the past, which exposes the wave of regression that have been insisting in re-emerging. As our memory, which plays pieces with us all the time, reality is also far from linear. Nevertheless, achievements were made and it is necessary to recognize them.
As a trend indicated by our filmmakers - from young people to renowned professionals who value the format for its freedom and conciseness - we see the achievement of a multiplicity of views. Diversity and representativeness, to name two triggering words at the moment, are present throughout the programming, both in front and behind the cameras.
Once again we thank our sponsors and partners who helped us make this 29th edition, and all the producers and filmmakers - of almost 3,500 films submitted - that entrusted us their works. For the first time, we faced the challenge of including resources of Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual, which ensured the realization of the Curta & Mercado project and the expansion of training activities at the Festival.
We invite you all to join us in a new marathon through the world of short films. They are also days of holding encounters, debating, exchanging ideas and enjoy the short films projected in the best movie theatres in our city.
Good Festival everyone!
